Fun Hedgehog Facts for Kids

Hedgehogs are spiky but adorable. Here are 7 Fun Hedgehog Facts for Kids:

  1. Hedgehogs are nocturnal
  2. They can hibernate
  3. Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant
  4. They weren’t always called hedgehogs
  5. There are 15 species of hedgehogs
  6. Hedgehogs have over 5000 spikes
  7. Their long snout is useful

Let’s start with the fact that hedgehogs are nocturnal. That means they sleep during the day and come out at night.
Animals that hibernate hole themselves up and stay in a dormant state for winter.

I found it interesting that hedgehogs can hibernate but not all of them do.

Did you know that hedgehogs are lactose intolerant? You should never leave milk out for them to drink.

Simply water is perfect for them!

The hedgehog was not always their name before they were called Urchins which led to the naming of Sea Urchins.

There is not only one kind of hedgehog. There are 15 different species out there.

All hedgehogs have between 5000-7000 spikes on their back. These can be raised and lowered to respond to threats.

Each spine lasts about one year before dropping out and being replaced.

Hedgehogs use their long snout for hunting. It is ahead of their mouths, making it easier to forage for their staple diet of insects, worms, caterpillars, and berries.
